JIMBO'S WATERLOG
MARCH 2009 -- Ultimate Multisport Fishing Kayaks
Jimbo Meador
With the present condition of the economy, kayak fishing is even more appealing than ever. The Ultimate Multisport kayaks are especially appealing because a little extra initial investment will get you a truly multi-use watercraft that is one of the most versatile kayaks on the market today. The Ultimate Multisport kayak is not a new kayak that has to be proven but a kayak that has been a proven performer in the fishing world; and I do mean all over the world. The Ultimate is one of the few kayaks on the market that was actually designed for fishing and not just another kayak that, with the addition of rod holders and an anchor to an existing recreational kayak, became an "angler model".

The Ultimate was designed to be stable enough to stand up and fish without sacrificing performance. This was accomplished with the Tunnel Hull design, which gave it the stability and tracking ability that is needed to be a performance paddling and poling kayak. The Tunnel Hull combined with a low profile also keeps the Ultimate from being affected by the wind. The openness of the design allows you easy access to your gear and allows you to get in and out of the kayak very easily. You can even sit sidesaddle while fishing or while getting in and out of the kayak. Fishing and performance were the key factors in the design. The Ultimate kayak design has proven itself not only in the fishing world but also as a performance paddling and poling craft.

Now with the addition of a trunk well that will accept a pedaling system or an electric system, we have added two more dimensions to an already proven design: the Ultimate Multisport W/ Propel Pedal Drive and the Ultimate Multisport W/ Volt Electric Drive. The addition of The Wind sail system makes the multisport even more versatile. We now have an already proven kayak that you can paddle, pole, pedal, power, or sail. The pedal drive and the volt system are also interchangeable. If you buy a pedal drive, you can later buy a volt system and interchange it with the pedal drive system, or visa versa. The real beauty is the fact that you can remove the pedal drive or the volt system and put the cover on the trunk well. Now you are back to the original Ultimate kayak.

The addition of the Propel drive and Volt system increases your range and geographical radius tremendously. You can now reach the areas that you intend to fish with greater speed and a lot less effort. No more worrying if you will have to buck a head wind or a strong current to get to your fishing area or if the conditions might change while you are fishing so that you will have to struggle to get back to your starting point.

You can also increase the travel distance to your fishing destinations. Once you reach the area that you intend to fish, you can make adjustments to suit the fishing conditions. If the water is extremely shallow where you plan to fish, you can pivot the Propel pedal drive or electric Volt unit over into the bow and replace the trunk well cover. Now it is out of your way and you can pole or paddle just like you did in the original Ultimate.

The Propel drive and the Volt system offer you hands-free fishing. Both systems allow you to mount rod holders in locations on the kayak that would normally be in the way if you were paddling and allow you to troll with your rods within easy reach. You can even hold a rod in your hand while you troll which allows you to give your bait or lure some action and allows you to set the hook when you get a strike. The fact that both the Propel and the Volt system have reverse is really important when you are fighting a fish. It will help you stop fish that are pulling you into structure or areas that would break the line and cause you to lose the fish. Reverse also helps you stop when you need to without getting your paddle out in order to stop. If the wind or current is pushing you down on fish or into an unfavorable fishing position, you have the ability to stop and stay in position to fish an area more efficiently and effectively. I have also found that with reverse I can pedal backwards and work a jig along the bottom in deeper water very effectively. Another method that I have found very effective is to sit sidesaddle while drifting over an Volt Electric Drive

area. You can control your drift by reaching over and turning the pedals by hand when necessary to move the kayak forward or backward in order to stay in position.

All of these options give you the ability to utilize one kayak to fulfill all of your needs. In these tough financial times, that is of ultimate importance. The only way to really appreciate the multi-features of these kayaks is to test drive one at your local dealer.
